Workshop | Live Coding for women and non-binary with Ólöf Rún

This is a three-hour workshop aimed at introducing the fundamentals of Sonic Pi, a live coding environment for music, taught by Icelandic singer and producer Ólöf Rún of Læti: instagram.com/olofbenedikts

Participants ages 16 and older are welcome, and no coding experience is necessary. Please note the workshop will be held in Icelandic and English, and there are limited seats available. Participants must bring their own laptop / computer and headphones, although a limited number of on-site computers will be provided upon request.

The workshop aims to bridge the gap between technology and music, empowering participants with the skills and confidence to explore the creative possibilities of live coding. After the workshop, participants will have a foundational understanding of live coding and Sonic Pi, empowering them to explore further in the realm of music technology. Participants will leave with newfound skills and enthusiasm for utilising technology in their musical endeavours.

Objectives:

  • Introduction to Live Coding: The primary objective of the workshop is to familiarise participants with the concept of live coding and its application in music production.
  • Basic Understanding of Sonic Pi: Participants will gain practical experience in using Sonic Pi to create music in real-time. The workshop will cover essential functions and features of Sonic Pi, enabling attendees to compose their music.
  • Building Confidence in Music Technology: By the end of the workshop, participants will feel more confident in utilising technology as a tool for music creation. This includes understanding basic programming concepts in the context of music production and gaining proficiency in Sonic Pi.

The International Conference on Live Coding (ICLC) 2024, hosted by NYU Shanghai, China from May 30th to June 1st, has inspired a series of Satellite Events worldwide. To celebrate, Afhverju Ekki is launching the Icelandic live coding scene by hosting free public workshops, in partnership with ICLC, Reykjavík City Library Music Makerspace, Intelligent Instruments Lab, Læti, and RASK.
