Communitiy Recreation Center

Goals

The goal of the community center at Gerðuberg is to prevent and reduce social isolation by providing a community and recreation center to the public in addition to offering a number of classes. The centre facilitates meetups, social interaction, and creative activities. Our goal is to activate each and everyone’s ambition and ability.

The community center at Gerðuberg is open 8:30–16:00 every day with a diverse program of events for people of all ages. The day-time program features a great number of fun and diverse projects under the supervision of experienced instructors and volunteers. It is not necessary to reserve a spot in advance, it’s fine to just show up. And of course, the coffee pot is always on!

We offer courses/classes in, for example, glass cutting, woodcarving, visual art, knitting, book binding, and exercise. Water aerobics classes take place at the Breiðholtslaug swimming pool and they also have a putting course. Those who enjoy singing can take part in the Gerðuberg choir, which has been together for many years.

At specific times, we open areas to the public for gatherings and games. The building is also rented out for various classes and for group and club meetings after hours and during the day if it’s possible. Guests have access to a computers and we typically have the latest newspapers. Religious assemblies under the guidance of a priest/deacon are held weekly.
