Exhibition | Folded Landscape

Thursday October 6th 2022 - Friday January 6th 2023

Sæunn Þorsteinsdóttir exhibits works she made by folding traditional maps.

The maps turn into a different and new landscape than they were originally intended to show.

A map shows the contours of the land. Although the map is flat it conveys the depth of valleys, the size of lakes and the length of fjords. It brings to mind the desolate beauty of black beaches and the magnificence of mountains. Maps illustrate landscapes in measurable form using lines and numbers, but memories, place names and stories add life and colour.

About the works Sæunn says:

"The paper weighs next to nothing and yet I can feel the weight of a mountain. And in my mind I can choose to envision that mountain far in the distance or to perch on the mountaintop and gaze near and far."

Sæunn studied art at the Icelandic School of Arts and Crafts and music at the Reykjavík Music School. She graduated from the University of Akureyri with B.ed degree in Visual Arts and Music in 2005. She has also attended courses in exhibition design and visual arts in Iceland, Austria, the United States and Japan. Sæunn's solo exhibitions are six and she has also participated in number of group exhibitions.
