Freeshop | Flower Pounding – Printing with nature

Miðvikudagur 28. maí 2025

Join us for this fun, hands-on introduction workshop where you will learn how to make printed patterns on fabric with plants through the Tataki-zomé method, a Japanese technique for printing with plants. We will collect flowers from around the library campus and then hammer them onto fabric to create our own designs. It is a sustainable, non-toxic and unique way to usher in Summer time. Fabric will be provided but please feel free to bring a hammer and flowers from your garden (any flowers with color will work).

The workshop is led by Christalena Hughmanick

Christalena is a visual artist, performer & educator living in Reykjavik, Iceland. In these practices, she builds community through teaching and shared experience, while playing with roles of artist to viewer and consumer to producer. These social practice methodologies developed through obtaining a MFA degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2010-12). She takes a theoretical approach related to cultural anthropological studies, enacted through fieldwork that aims to capture vernacular knowledge production systems that may disappear such as patchwork quilting and natural dyeing techniques. Efforts are motivated by eternally deep connections between women, nature and creation that she aims to embed into broader art world dialogues.

The workshop will be taught in English.
It is necessary to sign up below as space is limited.
Event on Facebook.
