Hate Speech

Hate speech includes any expression that encourages, promotes, disseminates or justifies violence, hatred or discrimination against an individual or group of people based on their actual or supposed personal characteristics or status such as race, colour, language, religion, origin, age, disability, gender, gender identity or sexual orientation

Today, hate speech is mostly ignored and hate crimes are rarely reported. They are not investigated as such andare therefore undocumented. This leaves victims of hate speech/ hate crimes isolated and usually stand alone.

One of the consequences of hate speech is that people withdraw from public discussion. The Reykjavik City Library wants to create a platform where diverse groups have the opportunity to express their own experiences in their own words. Icelandic is the language of all of us who live here, just like the fight against hate speech should be everyone's fight.
