Wordshop | who is an Icelander?
Who is an Icelander? What kind of Icelander are you?
Do we need new words to describe our lived experiences as Icelanders of mixed origins? Join us for this wordshop where we will discuss what makes us "Icelanders", reflect on what words are used to describe us and create new Icelandic words to better describe our reality.
"We are all just Icelanders and that should be enough as an answer - but we still often have to explain it with something extra because people don't pay attention to our explanations." Miriam Petra and Friðrik Agni
2 hours
15-20 min - introduction to the wordshop and why we are doing this
30 min - discussions about the words used by "mixed Icelanders" to describe themselves
30 min - discussion about what makes us Icelanders
40 min - work on the discussions: write down words under the heading "Icelander."
Wordshop designed and led by Friðrik Agni and Miriam Petra. It is free, open to all ages, and part of the Love Speech Library project.
Love Speech is a project that emphasizes lived realities, emotional literacy and ownership of the Icelandic language. As the title of the project implies, the emphasis is on playing with words and all those involved in the project are therefore encouraged to create new Icelandic words. The words are then collected in a new dictionary which is kept in the Reykjavik City Library and available to consult on location. In addition to the object of the dictionary, we are creating a platform to discuss what is dear to us - our experience of communication.
