What is the E-Library Rafbókasafnið?

The E-Library is a collaboration between the Consortium of Icelandic Libraries and Reykjavik City Library. The aim is to offer free access to a wide range of audiobooks, eBooks and magazines to the public.

Those who have a valid library card at the Reykjavik City Library or any other associated public library, can use the E-Library. See list of associated libraries here.


How do I access to the E-Library?

Phones and Tablets

  • The easiest way to use the E-Library is to use the Libby app on your phone or tablet. You can download the app from the App Store or Google Play.
  • The Barcode Number on your library card and the password for My pages (Mínar síður) is used to activate the access.

Computers

  • You can listen, read or browse from your computer on rafbokasafn.is, but you can also install the Libby app on libbyapp.com.
  • The Barcode Number on your library card and the password for My pages (Mínar síður) is used to activate the access.
  • If you want to download books to your computer, you need to install Adobe Digital Editions.
  • Further instructions below.

Reading Tablets

  • You can read on most reading tablets, except Kindle and Storytel.
  • To read from a reading tablet, you need to create an Adobe ID access and download and install the Adobe Digital Editions program on a computer. The book is then downloaded to the computer, opened in Adobe Digital Editions and transferred to the reading tablet.

How do I find my barcode number?

  • The card number is on your library card and usually starts with GE, A, B, IL or 400.
  • If you have a digital library card, you can check the card number on your phone.
  • You can also find it under My settings on My pages on the City Library website.


Other

I want to buy or renew a library card

  • Sign in to My pages with electronic ID here on the City Library website and you will be directed to a payment page.
  • Those who have a free library card are advised to ask for help at their local library.

​​​How long can books be borrowed?

  • The loan period can be 7, 14 or 21 days and the material is automatically returned after the period has passed.
  • We encourage you to return your book as soon as you finish - so that the next person can enjoy it. If no one is waiting for the book, you can extend the loan.
  • There are no fines at the Electric Library.

How many books can you borrow at once?

  • You can borrow 21 books at a time and have 21 reserved books.
  • Do I need to connect to the Internet to read or listen or read?
  • You can download books and magazines from the Libby app for phones and tablets or the Adobe Digital Editions for computers and reading tablets.
  • An Internet connection is necessary to read and listen in a browser.

Can you use the E-Library without downloading apps or applications?

  • You can listen or read using a web browser on a computer, tablet or smartphone, so no need to download any other programs to do so.
