BORGARBÓKASAFNIÐ

The Little Library visits the youngest preschool groups, filled with books specially suited for our youngest readers. Through The Little Library, parents receive a letter from the Reykjavik City Library, an application for the child’s first library card, and encouragement to foster a positive reading culture at home.
All children can get a free library card until the age of 18. Parents can complete the application form, submit it at the service desk of the nearest Reykjavik City Library, and children can then borrow books, films, music, boradgames, and more free of charge!
How does the Little Library work?
Preschools will receive an email when it is time for The Little Library to visit. During the visit, children and parents can borrow books to take home for 1–2 days and then return them to The Little Library at the preschool. The Little Library stays at each location for approximately three weeks.
Parents will receive a message from the preschool a few days before The Little Library leaves, reminding them to return the books. If it is not possible to return the books to The Little Library at the preschool, they can be returned to the nearest Reykjavik City Library.
The Little Library will return the following year to visit the next generation of new preschool children.
The Little Library project received a grant from the Icelandic Public Libraries Fund. Other libraries are welcome to make use of the project and may obtain permission to use the illustrations to build their own Little Library. The designer is Guðrún Lilja Gunnlaugsdóttir.
