Exhibition | Sketches become... books! Bergrún Íris

Wednesday March 18th 2026 - Wednesday April 15th 2026

In this exhibition, you can see into the magical world of children's books. The illustrators allow us to follow the creative process and sketching that ultimately become fully-fledged illustrations in children's books.

Illustrator and author Bergrún Íris Sævarsdóttir showcases the sketching and creative process behind some of her books. Among the works in the exhibition are sketches from her first book, You’ve got to love the Icelandic weather (Vinur minn, vindurinn), which was published in 2014 and nominated for the Nordic Council Children and Young People's Literature Prize as well as the Women's Literature Prize (Fjöruverðlaunin). Other books include Töfralandið, Elstur í bekknum and the ever-popular books about Freyja and Fróði, which Bergrún created together with the author Kristjana Friðbjörnsdóttir. The exhibition gives visitors an insight into the multifaceted work of an author who creates both words and images.

Bergrún Íris Sævarsdóttir was born in 1985 and lives in Hafnarfjörður with her family. She graduated with a BA in Art History from the University of Iceland in 2009, completed a diploma in drawing from the Reykjavík School of Visual Arts in the spring of 2012, and attended a summer school in children's book creation at Anglia Ruskin, Cambridge School of Art.

Bergrún Íris has received numerous awards and recognitions for her work, including the Icelandic Literary Prize in the children's and young adult category, the Guðrún Helgadóttir Children's Book Award, and the West Nordic Council's Children and Young People's Literature Prize.

A workshop will be offered in connection with the exhibition.
