Summer Reading | The Reading Hero

Lestrarhetjan

A reading challenge and a superhero board game

This summer, we encourage everyone to put on their superhero capes and take part in the public libraries' Summer Reading. Reading is a superpower, the more you read, the more you learn and understand.

At the nearest Reykjavik City Library or other selected public libraries, you will get the summer reading booklet. It includes six reading challenges and a fun superhero board game. In the reading challenge we encourage the reading heroes to read a certain number of minutes, which the reading hero sets in consultation with a parent or another adult. How many minutes will you read in one week? Each time a challenge is completed, the parent/guardian gives their signature, and the reading hero visits the library with the confirmation to get a sticker to put on the board game.

The reading hero to the rescue in Hurly-burly Town

The game board is a picture of Hurly-burly Town. In Hurly-burly Town everything is a mess! People and creatures need to be rescued from immediate danger! You can be the reading hero who saves the day with your ultimate superpower, vocabulary! The game is a cooperative game where players help each other to save people and creatures in trouble. Players take turns being the hero while the others guess who/what the reading hero is going to save in the picture.

Each sticker reveals more things that is going on in Hurly-burly Town. That’s how the board game expands with each reading challenge that the reading hero completes over the summer.

The pictures are by Bergrún Íris Sævarsdóttir and the board game designer is Steingerður Lóa Gunnarsdóttir. The conceptual work is carried out in collaboration of children's librarians from public libraries all around Iceland and the material is published by the Center for Education and School Services.

Summer reading party

We will celebrate great results with a great summer reading party in Grófin. Lucky reading heros will get prizes when we draw from the summer reading pool and there wil be a fun show. More about that later.
Those who have collected all six stickers during the summer can participate in summer reading pool. The last chance to submit a ticket is August 16th. Will you be the lucky reading hero to be drawn and win a prize at the summer reading party?

Don't panic if you can't collect all the stickers before school starts. The stickers will be available at the libraries while supplies last.
