Symposium in Tjarnarbíó | See Your Beauty

Saturday October 28th 2023

A symposium about Kristín Ómarsdóttir's career in fiction and visual arts, See your beauty, is organized by Reykjavík City Library and will be held in Tjarnarbíó, Saturday the 28th of October, between 2-5pm.

Two days prior to that, Thursday the 26th of October, an exhibition of her art work will open in Gerðuberg City Library.


Kristín Ómarsdóttir was born in Reykjavik, the 24th of september 1962. She has written work within various fields of literature since 1985; poetry, theatre, fiction and short stories, and her voice is unique. She has gotten multiple awards for her work. Her first work, the play Draumar á hvolfi (1985) (Upside down dreams) won first price in a competition at the National Theatre of Iceland. Her play Ástarsaga 3 (1997) (Love Story 3) was nominated to the Nordic Playwrights' Award and the novel Elskan mín ég dey (1997) I'll Die, My Love was nominated to the Nordic Council's Literature Award in 1999. She won the Playwright of the Year in 2005 Gríman Award, for her play Segðu mér allt (Tell Me Everything). She has been nominated multiple times to the Icelandic Literature Awards, for example for her book of poetry kóngulær í sýningargluggum (2017) for which she also got the Maístjarnan Award for the best poetry book published in Iceland that year, and was nominated to the Nordic Council's Literature Award for. Her books have been translated to many languages and in 2018 Waitress in Fall was chosen Best Poetry Book of the Year at The Sunday Times. In 2022 her novel Svanafólkið/Swanfolk was published in English in Britain and the USA. Kristín has studied Russian, Icelandic and Literature at the University of Iceland and Spanish as a second language at the Unviersity of Barcelona.

The symposium is meant to cast a light on Kristín Ómarsdóttir work and peer into the author's mind. Alongside the symposium an art exhibition will open in Gerðuberg, which will be open from the 26th of October until the end of 2023. The exhibition will show Kristín's work of art. This will be Kristín's first solo exhibition, although she has been an active artist as well, during her whole carrier. 

The conductor of the symposium is Halldór Guðmundsson, literary scholar, author and former publishing director. The curator of the exhibition is artist Guðlaug Mía Eyþórsdóttir. Moderators, alongside the conductor, will be Jórunn Sigurðardóttir, radio producer and actress, and Ásta Kristín Benediktsdóttir, assistant professor in Icelandic contemporary literature. Gyða Valtýsdóttir and Úlfur Hansson will have a musical performance during the break of the symposium.
