Journaling with a Japanese Twist | Guðrún from Nakano

Thursday September 11th 2025

Join us for a creative and inspiring event where journaling takes center stage.

Our guest, Guðrún Helga Halldórsdóttir, spends part of the year living in Kyoto, Japan, where she explores the city’s neighbourhoods in search of small, everyday adventures to capture in her journal. Her husband teaches at a university in Japan, so the family lives between two countries – embracing the experience with serenity and curiosity.

Back home in Iceland, Guðrún runs Nakano, a small stationery shop, a hidden gem in the back on Grensásvegur 16. But Nakano is no ordinary shop – it’s built around the stories and objects Guðrún has collected during her years in Japan.

Guðrún believes that journaling can be a key to finding joy in daily life – a simple tool to notice the little things we often overlook, and a space to let creativity flow.

During the event, Guðrún will introduce various journaling methods and showcase different types of notebooks and accessories – including pens, stamps, stickers, photos, and clippings. She’ll also talk about her personal journaling journey, her connection to Japan, and her store, Nakano, which offers Japanese diaries, writing tools, and a variety of beautiful decorative supplies.

Guests are encouraged to bring their own journals and will have the chance to try out materials, jot down ideas, and experiment with the tools Guðrún brings along.

The event will take place in the Miðdalur hall, where you can sit at a table, enjoy a cup of coffee, and follow along with the presentation on screen.

Free and open to all – no registration needed.
