Fræðakaffi | Vertu úlfur – Tilbrigði við geðheilbrigði

Monday October 6th 2025

Perception – thought – emotion – consciousness – Héðinn Unnsteinsson discusses the fundamental elements of human existence in a poetic and entertaining way, with an emphasis on mental well-being. Among other things, Héðinn bases his discussion on the 14 Words of Life, which are part of the book and the play of the same name, Be a Wolf.

Héðinn Unnsteinsson is passionate about a new and more humane approach to mental health issues. That our society works more systematically with people's strengths and deliberately turns away from an overemphasis on any kind of human deviation. That we create a better and more humane mental healthcare system where user priorities lead development.

Héðinn is a qualified teacher and policy expert with a master's degree in International Policy and Analysis from the University of Bath in England. Héðinn worked in the Government Offices of Iceland from 2007-2022. Héðinn has worked as a part-time lecturer at the Faculty of Political Science and the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Iceland, and in servant leadership within the Faculty of Business at Bifröst University. For the past 30 years, Héðinn has worked in the field of mental health, both based on his own experience and as a specialist in policy-making in this area. From 2003 to 2010, Héðinn worked as a mental health specialist for the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO). Héðinn initiated the Mental Health Project and the 10 Mental Health Words. Héðinn wrote the book “Be a Wolf” which, among other things, describes his experience with the mental health system. Héðinn served on the board of Geðhjálp from 2013-2015 and again from 2019 as vice-chairman and as chairman from 2020-2023.
