Thursday March 31st 2022
Snærós Sindradóttir, journalist at RÚV (the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service), and Ármann Jakobsson, professor in Old Icelandic Literature at the University of Iceland, discuss a remarkable archeological excavation in Finland that indicates that an Iron Age leader there was both intersex and non-binary. They will also discuss the significance of the discovery with regard to the status of different genders in the Middle Ages in Iceland and how it appears in Njála, Snorri-Edda and Heimskringla.
