Wake up Spring | Textile printing with Christalena Hughmanick

Saturday April 18th 2026

Join us for this fun, hands-on introduction to printing with plants onto fabric through the eco-printing method with steam. We will use kitchen waste of onion skins from local restaurants to create unique patterns in a completely sustainable way. All materials and tools will be provided and no prior experience is necessary. Each participant will leave with their own archival fabric print.

The workshop is led by Christalena Hughmanick. Christalena is a visual artist, performer and educator living in Reykjavik, Iceland. In these practices, she builds community through teaching and shared experience, while playing with roles of artist to viewer and consumer to producer. These social practice methodologies developed through obtaining a MFA degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2010-12).

Participation is free but space is limited and therefore registration here below is mandatory.

This event is part of our Spring Festival in the Freeshop int Gerðuberg: Wake up Spring. We celebrate the cycle of nature and welcome you to various different events related to spring activities. The Freeshop in Gerðuberg is a free community space where all items are available at no cost. Visitors can bring items in good condition that they no longer need and take home things they do need.

This event is a part of a project called make-a-thek which is funded by the EU.
