Children's Culture Festival | Interlinguistic Musical Hour for babies with Tónagull

Tuesday April 18th 2023

A wonderful musical hour where the babies are introduced to the magical world of music.

Children are highly intellectual beings who absorb everything that goes on in their environment. Language acquisition begins long before children begin to speak, and likewise, children adapt to the music of their culture incredibly early. Experience shows that music has an enormous appeal to children. Through music there are opportunities to stimulate children's development in many areas. Musical practice in a group is unique for children who are discovering their surroundings.

Tónagull systematically works with music using methods that are suitable for this young age.

The musical hour lasts about 45 minutes and the emphasis is on togetherness and joy. We start with a song that welcomes everyone by name and at the end a farewell song is sung. In between, we will work with patting mantras, body mantras, lap games, movement games, singing dances, baroque dances, circle dances, egg shakers, colorful veils, drums and children's instruments.

The musical hour is supervised by Adam Switala, who is a musician, composer, lecturer and teacher. He is also a doctoral student and assistant professor at the University of Iceland's Faculty of Education. Adam uses teaching methods he has developed in collaboration with Dr. Helga Rut Guðmundsdóttir, founder of Tónagull, who has specialized in the musical development of children since their birth.

Since Adam is from Poland, the musical hour is in three languages; English, Icelandic and Polish, but the most important thing is of course the music.

This event received funding from the Children's Culture Fund and is a collaboration between the Reykjavík City Library and the Children's Culture Festival, but this year's program can be found here.
