Culture night I Into the Mists of the Future

Saturday August 23rd 2025

Dear passengers, please fasten your seatbelts, this is your captain speaking.

The plane is now ready for take-off on a journey into the future. At the City Library, you’ll find all sorts of things about the past, but on this Culture Night we ‘ll take a glimpse into the unknown.  What might the future hold? Is it completely hidden from us, or is it possible to catch a glimpse of what lies ahead?

Running all day 13.00-22.00

The Planet of Lego | 1st floor:
Mountain of Lego bricks for people of all ages. Build your dream spaceship, future house or even flying cars! Let your imagination run wild and let your inner Lego designer shine!

“Sure I ‘ve been to space” - Selfie station |  1st floor:
Take a selfie in a space costume with your alien friends to make sure your relatives believe you ‘ve just been to space  #ovissuferdBBS

Spaceship |  2nd floor:
Who doesn’t want to be an astronaut or maybe even an alien? Explore the space and travel to planets far, far away (in the children’s section). All necessary equipment will be provided for young astronauts

Scavenger hunt |  2nd floor:
Do you want to know more about the unknown? There are many hidden gems to be found in the shelves of the children’s department. Will you be able to find the answers about the wonders of the space — or maybe something else?

Badge making

13.30 – 14.30 | 2nd floor
It’s crucial for all astronauts to wear the right gear with proper button badges, especially the button badges — very important! It would be really awkward to be mistaken for an alien! In this workshop we will make the proper button badges that can take you to unknown planets.

The Magic of Calligraphy

14.30 – 15.30 | 2nd floor
Long ago, before the computer, stories and adventures were handwritten on paper, sometimes with the beautiful art of calligraphy. Guy Stewart demonstrates how to write letters in calligraphy and guides guests on how to use special tools for it. Who knows if this age-old know-how will come handy in the future.

Fortune telling

15.30 – 17.30 | 5th floor
Should I take that job offer? Is there life after death? Should I ask my cute neighbour out on a date? Tarot reader Andrea Ágústa Aðalsteinsdóttir will read your cards. Every session will take 10 minutes – limited spots, so show up early and get your ticket!

Manga drawing course

15.00 – 16.00 | 5th floor
We are not sure how the fashion or even the world will look in the future, but you can always wonder by drawing in a Japanese Manga style. Hannah Sensai will teach you the basic technique and rules for making Manga pictures. Hannah guides you through how to draw expressive characters. No drawing experience needed!

What to take with you: Pencils, pens, erasers, and sketchbook/notebook. Organizers will also provide pencils and paper, but in limited quantities. Free entry, but spots are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Salsa lesson

17.00 – 18.00 I 1st floor
Will there be dance in the future? How about in other planets? Maestro Jóhannes Agnar Kristinsson, salsa teacher for many years, gets the blood moving and teaches young and old the basic steps of salsa.

Silent disco

20.00 – 22.00 | 1st floor
At the end of mystery trip, the plane lands softly on the dance floor where passengers get cordless headphones and can switch between different channels while dancing like there is no tomorrow – the future is unwritten ...

Dear passengers, we would like to thank you for flying with us today. We hope you ‘ve had a pleasant flight with us and that you ‘re a little bit wiser on what the future may have in store for you. Even though there are still many unknowns, one thing is certain there will be good times ahead at the Reykjavík City Library! We hope to see you in the near future!
