Katla Marín Stefánsdóttir will introduce the art of macramé and show how to tie the most basic knots and also suggest where to begin if there is an interest in learning macramé.

During her courses of the art of macramé, Katla Marín has already taught about 200 people the method. She has also published instructions and recipes for knotting. Her artworks decorate many Icelandic homes, summerhouses and various spaces of other kind.

Macramé, called knotting in Icelandic is an old textile method that has become increasingly popular in recent times. Macramé has a long history and its origins lie in 14th century Arabia. About 30 years ago macramé became greatly popular in Iceland.

Knowing how to do macramé makes it possible to adorn homes, for example with wallhangings and hangings for flower pots but things can also be knotted for other purposes that have both meaning and usability. Macramé consists of some few basic knots and various things can be created, like glass coasters or large detailed wallhangings. When the basic knots have been mastered, lots of possibilities come into being. At that point it‘s fun to let the imagination take charge as the  possibilities are endless. The macramé method can create beautiful artwork and while making things this way, the mind can be at ease it is creative and it can enchant mindfulness.

Katla Marin is a MA student of clinical psychology as well as an instructor of macramé knotting. Her exhibition Magical Macramé (In Icelandic: Hugarflug) opens the 12th of January 2022 where she will have on show her artwork with macramé technique.
