How to Use the E-Library

The e-library and its catalogue of e-books and audio books are yours to enjoy, but the first step is to sign in with your library card. The e-library is powered by OverDrive and you can access through a your browser or dedicated app or program. You’ll find more information about your options below.

Registration

You must have a valid library card and password from The Reykjavik City Library or other affiliated library.

The first time you sign in, you must type in the barcode number on your library card and password. The barcode number is typically found on the front of the card and starts with GE, A, B IL, or 400.

Can't find your library card? You can view your barcode number by logging into "My Account" here on the library website and clicking "My Settings".

Don't remember your password? Click here to set a new password.

It’s also possible to sign in with your Facebook account or an OverDrive account, but in order to borrow books, you must initially provide the number on your library card and your password.

Libby app for phones and smart devices

On the Rafbókasafnið Facebook page you’ll find detailed step-by-step instructions for the Libby app! (Icelandic only at the moment.) It’s possible to read e-books and listen to audiobooks through the Libby app, available for iOS, Android, and Windows 10 phones and other smart devices with access to the App Store (iOS), Play Store (Android), and Microsoft Store (Windows 10).

Please note that the Overdrive app, the predecessor to the Libby app, was discontinued end of April 2023.

E-book readers

It’s possible to read e-library books on most e-readers apart from Kindle and Storytel devices. It’s not possible to read e-library books on Storytel or Kindle readers, with the exception of Kindle Fire.

To read books from the e-library on an e-book reader you must first create an Adobe account (if you don't have one already) and then download the Adobe Digital Editions program on your computer. Books can then be downloaded on your computer, opened with Adobe Digital Editions, and transferred from there to an e-book reader.
