Co-Created Icelandic Dictionary

What words are missing from the Icelandic language? As society evolves, languages evolve with us, and new terms are necessary to have the conversations we want to have in an ever-changing reality. All words were once made up, so join us in adding your words to our new co-created dictionary and shape the future of the Icelandic language with us!

open mic event

It could be a word that exists in another language you speak and has no equivalent in Icelandic. Or perhaps a totally new word that describes a situation or emotion that is important to you. Contact us if you need any help and feel free to mix languages in the form below if it helps you express your thoughts.

We celebrated the launch of the library's co-created dictionary with an open mic event where people could share their new words to a live audience, and we collected precious new words such as: glápamaður, lærleggssmíð, blundtakki, ómjólk, samkenndarfötlun, þagnarskuld, glundró, skásystkin, tvíbúi, brjálæðisvíma, vindhviðasnarpur, fagraorðaþoka, steinþögull, draumljóð, ostfangin, minnihlutahópastress, spenntóttabið, eftirmorgunskvíði, þægindablaðra, sólarleyfi, neyslufall, lýðræðishetjuskapur, snortinleiki, tárahik, kvárföt.
