women's strike

On October 24th, 1975, Icelandic women called for women's Day Off and stopped working to emphasize the importance of women's work.

Now, 48 years later, for the seventh time, all women and all non-binary people are encouraged to participate in the fight for more equal conditions in the labor market and more justice society by not showing up to work on October 24th 2023. It applies to both paid and unpaid work, the so-called third shift at home.

It is estimated that around 90% of women in Iceland stopped working in 1975, with the reslut of paralyzed economy. About 25,000 women gathered at Lækjartorg, down town Reykjavík, in one of the most crowded open-air meetings in Iceland's history, and solidarity meetings were held in many parts of the country. Much has been achieved since 1975, but it is clear that there is still much work to be done. To to emphasise that, this year's title is, "You Call This Equality?"

The city library has a large collection of books related to equality and women's freedom. Below you can see an example of it.

Notice there will be reduced opening hours at all of the City libraries on October 24th due to the Women's and Non-Binary strike. Further information about our opening hours here.
