Reading Challenge for Children

This summer, children can embark on a fun reading adventure with Gúndi the Goat. Reykjavík City Library and the Department of Education and Youth Affairs have joined forces, in collaboration with school library staff across Reykjavík, to distribute “passports” to all students in grades 1–6, inviting them to take part in the adventure.
Reykjavík City Library and public libraries across the country have offered a popular summer reading challenge in recent years. This year’s challenge, titled Gúndi the Goat and the Great Grass Quest, begins on May 20 and runs until August 20.
For the first time, Reykjavík City Library, with the support of the Department of Education and Youth Affairs, will provide all children in grades 1–6 in Reykjavík with a passport to join Gúndi’s adventure. The passports will be distributed to primary schools in Reykjavík in the coming days.
The Summer Reading Challenge works like this: for every 15 minutes of reading, children colour in part of the path on the adventure map inside their passport. Once they have reached one hour of reading, they can visit their nearest Reykjavík City Library with their passport to receive a stamp and a raffle ticket.
Raffle tickets will be drawn throughout the summer and at a harvest celebration at the end of the season. Lucky participants will win prizes!
We look forward to welcoming children to Reykjavík City Library this summer!
