Every day is a day to visit!
The Reykjavik City Library is a meeting place for families. We offer a family-friendly program of events year-round— all kinds of workshops, summer reading, Easter bingo, Christmas crafts, and more! At the library, you can find inspiration, participate in exciting events, see enjoyable exhibitions, and get your reading and creative juices flowing.
The family‘s favorite place
Do you feel best in the cosy environment of Sólheimar? Do you want to enjoy the winter sun at Spöngin? We encourage families to check out all of our locations, as each one has its own charm. The library has a lot to offer: books for everyone, magazines, music, and films. We also often bring out fun games, toys, and exciting costumes. Sometimes it’s just better to be an owl! Or a monster!
Funny weekends
There’s always something fun to do at the library over the weekends. Be sure to pay close attention to our events calendar on our website or follow us on Facebook. Every child should be able to find something of interest at the library!
Read, study, play?
When children are old enough, they are welcome to visit the library on their own, after school or on the weekends. The library has a lot to offer for children; it’s a fun place to meet up with friends, read leisurely, do arts and crafts, play games, or solve technical challenges. Do you think programming is exciting? Do you want to try a 3D printer? The Makerspace is an exciting place to experiment. And of course it’s possible to do homework in peace and quiet or work on group projects.
What would you like to read next?
We define literacy in a very broad sense and encourage parents and children to take advantage of our librarians’ expertise in finding fun, exciting material for the children. It’s a great idea to let the children take the lead when it comes to choosing reading material and other entertainment so that they can discover where their interests lie. Children must be literate in so many ways, in text, photos, technology, and culture.
Free fun!
Children under 18 years old qualify for a free library card. Adults can choose between purchasing a library card or a Reykjavik Culture Pass, which includes a library card and also grants access to The Reykjavík City Museum and Reykjavik Art Museum.
Library cards are also valid at our e-library, Rafbókasafnið.
