Understanding the Status and Struggles of Women

Public libraries across Iceland are collaborating on a project to mark Women’s Year 2025, aiming to deepen public understanding of the status and struggles of women. A diverse program will be offered, centered around reading, togetherness, and the shared experience of literature.  

In Iceland, like in many parts of the world, we have witnessed setbacks in the fight for gender equality. Traditional gender roles and gender-based marginalization have resurfaced, echoing stereotypes that prevailed half a century ago. Harassment and violence have become more frequent, and the discourse surrounding women and non-binary individuals has grown increasingly hostile.

Through this collaborative project, public libraries seek to strengthen ties with individuals, organizations, and institutions working on gender equality within their local communities and together create engaging programs in the social spaces of the libraries.
