Freeshop | Electroweaving with Rebekka Ashley

Wednesday November 13th 2024

Designer Rebekka Ashley hosts an open workshop in electroweaving. Electroweaves are textiles made from electrical cords

In the workshop, participants will create their own works of electroweaves under the guidance of Rebekka Ashley. The goal of the workshop is to demonstrate that electrical cables can have a second life as a material for creativity and can be enjoyed as a work of art.

Technology is developing rapidly and at the same time electrical cables become electronic waste after a short period of use. They get destroyed, fall out of circulation and become obsolete. Electrical cables do not have a continuous recycling life as they are composed of many different materials, which are difficult to separate. Every Icelander leaves around 24 kilos of e-waste per year. In total, the country's annual e-waste weighs about nine thousand tons. It can therefore be estimated that most of it will go into landfills. The electrical cords are not considered aesthetically pleasing and most people hide them behind walls or in cupboards. When a power cord has reached the end of its cycle, it is usually put away in a drawer or box with other power cords and it slowly accumulates over the years.

Materials for the workshop are available on site, but participants are encouraged to bring electrical cords from home, that are no longer in use. Children are welcome to participate accompanied by an adult.
