BORGARBÓKASAFNIÐ

The City of Reykjavík, the Children’s Welfare Fund (Velferðarsjóður barna) and Home and School (Heimili og skóli) have signed a declaration of cooperation on homework support for primary school children in Reykjavík. The agreement reflects a shared commitment to expanding and strengthening homework support for children across the city, with the aim of promoting equal opportunities and improving educational outcomes.
Reykjavík City Library will host the homework support programme at the library branches in Kringlan and Gerðuberg, while the non-profit organisation Home and School will oversee its organisation and coordination, with funding from the Children’s Welfare Fund.
The declaration was signed by Hildur Björnsdóttir, Mayor of Reykjavík; Sigvaldi Egill Lárusson, Chair of Home and School; and Kári Stefánsson, Chair of the Board of the Children’s Welfare Fund. The signing took place following remarks by the three representatives at Reykjavík City Library Kringlan today, Wednesday, 19 August, at 11:00.
Hildur said an important step had been taken. “The primary goal is to promote equal educational opportunities for children in Reykjavík and provide homework support to those who need it. We will start by offering the service at two Reykjavík City Library branches that are easily accessible by public transport. The service will be available to all primary school children in Reykjavík.”
Ingibjörg Ösp Óttarsdóttir, Project Manager for Children and Youth Programmes at Reykjavík City Library, also addressed guests. She said that the signing of the declaration on homework support for primary school children marked “a major step forward for children and families” in Reykjavík.
Following the signing, the floor was opened for discussion and guests were invited to enjoy coffee at the library.
