FAQ for Facilities & Equipment

Please send us a message at borgarbokasafn@borgarbokasafn.is if you have a question that is not answered below.

Do I need a library card, prior knowledge, ID, a residence permit, Icelandic language skills, etc. to use the facilities or equipment at the Reykjavík City Library?

  • Everyone is welcome, but younger children should be accompanied by an adult. A library card is only required when facilities or equipment are booked for private use and when booking the Kompan podcast studio.

Does it cost anything to use the facilities?

  • No, admission is free. However, we charge a minimal materials fee for things such as vinyl cutting and button making. You can view the price list here.

Do you accept donations, such as computers or musical instruments?

  • We are happy to accept equipment that is in good working condition and can support our activities!
  • Please send us a message if you have something you believe could be useful.

Can I sell what I create?

  • Anything you create using the library’s equipment is yours, and you may do whatever you wish with it. However, mass production is not permitted.

Can I host an event, teach, or lead a workshop in the library spaces?

  • The facilities and technical equipment are not only for teachers or creative professionals, but for anyone who needs a space toshare knowledge. We welcome ideas for new workshops. Examples of workshops that have been held include image editing, photography, programming, songwriting, electronic music, and upcycling workshops.

Can I book a presentation?

  • Staff at the Reykjavík City Library make an effort to present facilities, equipment, and programming related to creative technology, for example at conferences and exhibitions aimed at people working on creative projects.

  • If you would like to book a presentation from us for an event related to teaching or school activities, please send us a message at borgarbokasafn@borgarbokasafn.is.
