Information about the event
Icelandic Language Dough
You are welcome to the revealing of our dictionary of new Icelandic words!
We will present new Icelandic words relating to Love Speech - a project that emphasizes lived experiences, emotional literacy and ownership of the language.
The event will start with a few words about the project by Dögg Sigmarsdóttir and Martyna Karolina Daniel, project managers for the Reykjavik City Libraries. We will then reveal the dictionary and hear from Anna Zelinková, our book binder. She will lead us through the process of making this book by hand. We will then hear from 5 contributors: Miriam Petra Ómarsdóttir Awad, Karólina Rós Ólafsdóttir, Helen Cova, Natasha S., Jóhann Kristían Jóhannsson and Reyn Alpha Magnúsar.
After the readings, we will have an open mic where everyone will be welcome to contribute with their new words! And of course snacks, drinks and chats!
The event is free of charge and everyone is welcome to join us.
We are creating a platform to discuss what is dear to us - our experience of communication and the words we want to hear and speak. It is clear that the manifestations of hate speech are many in our society and the consequences are serious. One of the consequences of hate speech is that people withdraw from public discussion. The Reykjavik City Library wants to create a platform where diverse groups have the opportunity to express their own experiences in their own words. Icelandic is the language of all of us who live here, just like the fight against hate speech should be everyone's fight.
