In a Green Meadow

Thursday January 12th 2023 - Sunday April 2nd 2023

Kristín Dýrfjörð's exhibition.

The exhibited items consist of needle-work that Kristín has worked at for the last three years. Birds and plants are her main subjects. The artwork is made up of various threads; wool, cotton and silk.

Kristín says this about her artwork:

"When I sew, I sometimes decide beforehand what I will do but I never decide how. I make sketches in my mind and sometimes in my sketchbook. Then I allow my feelings and different colours to take control of the sewing.

The act of sewing is a continuation of other forms of creative work I have practised and perhaps by doing that I have discovered my essential creative area.

While sewing I nourish both my mind and my skills, achieve relaxation and fluency. At the same time I get fresh ideas concerning my teaching job at the university and ideas for new artwork.

Kristín Dýrfjörð was born 1961 in Hafnarfjörður. The same year she, along with her family moved to Sauðárkrókur where she attended school. Later, she moved to Reykjavík, to district called Blesugróf. There she grew up in a town with the moors on one side and the river Elliðaár on the other. These are places she still visits and there she seeks inspiration. As a child Kristín enjoyed creating things and attended courses for teenagers at the Icelandic College for Art and Crafts. Her teacher was Jón Reykdal. At Fjölbraut in Breiðholt she made a point of attending as many creative courses as possible. Kristín is educated as a nursery school teacher and has a master´s degree in so called "evaluation studies".  For some years she worked at nursery schools where she put emphasis on creativity. From 1997 Kristín has taught at the University of Akureyri and today she is a docent there. Among other subjects she teaches about children´s creativity and their way of playing. In the last few years she has also worked as an instructor of several science workshops where she tries to connect various ways of creativity concerning natural science and children´s play.
