About the Grófin Library

Our downtown library is in the Grófin building at Tryggvagata 15. The library is located on the first, second, and fifth floors of the building. It also houses the Reykjavík Municipal Archives and the Reykjavik Museum of Photography.

It’s often very lively here, as we put on a lot of events, workshops, and exhibitions. At the same time, it’s easy to escape the hustle and bustle of downtown, explore our reading area, and get lost in the stacks. Come see for yourself.

Facilities

The library is spread out over three floors, which can be easily reached by stairs or elevator. Staff members on each floor are ready to answer questions and help with the search for material.

On the first floor you’ll find new books and other library items on display in the bright Bókatorg area. Sometimes we move the shelves out of the way to throw concerts and other events in that space. On the first floor you’ll also find Artótek, where you can rent or buy art by modern artists, enjoy the exhibitions featuring their work, or sit down and read a newspaper, magazine, or a book.

On the second floor you’ll find Icelandic and foreign works of fiction. There you’ll also find great facilities for children and teenagers, a big comics section, the podcast studio Kompan, and our makerspace, where we experiment with music and technology.

On the fifth floor you’ll find a more peaceful space. There you can dig into scholarly works and other informational texts and get help from our staff experts. In the music and film department you’ll find a bunch of CDs, quite a few vinyl records, sheet music, videos, and DVDs, plus books and magazines about music and films. You can also access computers, a printer, and a scanner for a small fee.
