Book Launch | Auður Þórhallsdóttir; The Downtown Rat in the city of literature

Sunday March 15th 2026

A book launch will be held to celebrate the publication of the children’s book The Downtown Rat in the city of literature by author Auður Þórhallsdóttir

Auður has written and illustrated four books about Rannveig the downtown rat, who lives in downtown Reykjavík and knows every corner of the city. Through her adventures, readers get to explore the city, its history, buildings, infrastructure and everyday life in an engaging and playful way.

The four books explore, among other things, the history of Reykjavík, the houses and buildings of the city, its water and infrastructure, and Reykjavík as a city of literature. The fourth book is published in collaboration with Reykjavík UNESCO City of Literature.

The stories are told with warmth and humour, combining education with imagination. The Downtown Rat is not only a fictional character but also a guide to Reykjavík’s cultural heritage and urban environment. Through her eyes, the city becomes vivid and accessible for younger readers. Auður’s work thus brings together education, art and a strong sense of place, and has been used as the basis for orginized family walks through downtown Reykjavík where children can follow the rat’s trail through the city.

The books are published by Skriða bókaútgáfa, an independent Icelandic publishing house.

We warmly invite everyone to come, explore the books, meet the author and celebrate the publication.
