Exhibtion | Icelandic Houses
During the winter, students in the 10th grade at Norðlingaskóli have chosen an Icelandic house that they find beautiful and interesting.
They gathered information about the houses and recreated them as small clay artworks. Some students also chose to glaze the houses they selected. The houses include churches, lighthouses, airport terminals, as well as other notable building such as Alþingishúsið (the Parliament House) and Arnarstapi.
Students at the lower grade level are currently learning about the country and the nation in workshop classes, with a focus on the development of houses. We used the book Byggingarnar okkar (Our Buildings) by Alma Sigurðardóttir, as a reference. There we could see how houses have evolved from turf huts to stone houses, wooden houses, and finally reinforced concrete buildings. As part of this work, students draw one of the houses chosen by the 10th grade and create a drawing of the same house. They receive both a photograph and the clay version to use as references.
The exhibition is also decorated with flowers drawn by students from the lower and middle grades. The students drew the flower of Norðlingaskóli, the dandelion, as well as meadow buttercups and arctic buttercups. The flowers remind us that spring is approaching.
In total, around 150 students from all grade levels of the school contribute to the exhibition. Norðlingaskóli has approximately 550 students altogether
The exhibition is part of The Children's Cultural Festival
