Spjalló receives a grant
Recently, the Reykjavík City Library received a grant from The Development Fund for Immigration Issues for Spjalló – Togetherness and Collaboration at the Library, a new and exciting collaborative project with the Upper Secondary School Kvennaskólinn (Kvennó).
In the fall of 2025, students learning Icelandic as a second language in the newly established Icelandic department at Kvennó, along with students from other programs at the school, will come together for weekly visits to the City Library Grófin (downtown).
There, they will collaborate on projects related to their interests and backgrounds, with an emphasis on joy, togetherness, and cooperation in areas such as language, technology, board games, and more.
Examples of projects the students can work on together include creating podcasts about what it's like to attend school in different countries, composing songs and lyrics about shared interests, making videos with a green screen and selfie station, doing arts and crafts, and playing board games from the Library's extensive collection.
The students will be supported by Katarzyna Agnieszka Rabeda, head of the Icelandic department at Kvennó, Sigurður Hermannsson, and Ingunn Hreinberg Indriðadóttir. All three have years of experience teaching Icelandic as a second language, and Sigurður and Ingunn have been part of the teaching team at Spjöllum með Hreim from the beginning. Valgeir Gestsson, a specialist in the music department of the City Library, will also assist the students with technical matters, music, podcasting, and video production.
The City Library is very grateful for the support and looks forward to the day when the 5th floor at the Library in Grófin will be filled with upper secondary students in the fall.
