The Biosphere; a Creation Story

Thursday March 14th 2024 - Thursday March 28th 2024

Location: The Circle, 2nd floor

The work consists of stones from the Snæfellsnes peninsula arranged in a human- scale spiral on the floor.

Through the spiral there is an Earth´s creation story is depicted, featuring samples of various stone types, followed by vegetation and concluding with clay sculptures of animals and humans on the outer edge.

The artwork takes us on a journey of creation from dawn of ages, serving as a source of ideas and reflections on the origin of the world and it´s continuation, where scientists have only been able to explain 15% of the origin of the universe, and the remaining 85% of unexplained matter is referred to as dark matter.

The artwork by Ester Jóhannesdóttir can thus prompt us to think about various aspects, such as the diverse creation stories in literature that emerged before the sciences, and hopefully also about the importance of nature conservation, as resources are not inexhaustible. The piece could also engage children in creating their own stories, exploring stones, plants and animal species.

Ester Jóhannesdóttir graduated with a MFA from the University of Leeds 2019, she´s been active as an artist for the last 20 years.
